Sketch Comedy #1

I forget the full story of how I came across Sketch Comedy, but it should be said that Jackson Ferrell (Twitter, Google Plus, Facebook) and I have become internet-friends. His comic is terrific! His disregard for the fourth wall makes the Silver Age Underfold look like a straightforward story, and it’s wonderful! His characters even interact with people in the comments!

For the month of June, I will be presenting a short story arc from Sketch Comedy that I feel accurately contains his storytelling, humor and art style rather well! I’ll also be posting questions from an interview with him in each post! Enjoy!

Interview Part 1:

Q. When did you know you wanted to make comics?

Labor Day, September 4th, 2006. I woke up at 7, went for an hour-long run, had breakfast, and made the very first Pungirls! strip. I’d had several comic ideas kicking around in my head for awhile, but when I had the day off from work, they just started pouring out of me. I knew Pungirls! was an incredibly stupid concept, but that Labor Day, I said to myself, “Let’s take this stupid concept and run with it.”

That said, making comics has always been part of my life. Even if I weren’t posting them on the web, I’d probably still be drawing them and sharing them with people.

Q. How did you get started with comics?

I started reading them in the paper when I was five. It was like learning a language: a kid hears people around him talking, and he starts trying to talk too. I mimicked what I saw in the paper, in the comic books, and started developing my own visual vocabulary.

Tune in next Wednesday for more from Sketch Comedy and creator, Jackson Ferrell!

Mal and Chad: The Biggest, Bestest Time Ever

mal-and-chad-biggest-bestest-time-ever-ad

Mal and Chad: The Biggest, Bestest Time Ever is a fun and funny adventure with a boy genius and his dog. Naturally, he has built a device so he can talk to his dog, and it’s wonderful.

Mal and Chad are a great mix of a few things I enjoy. They have a blend of friendship as seen in Calvin and Hobbes or Jake and Finn from Adventure Time. Mal’s genius is up there with the other hapless children inventors as in Jimmy Neutron and Dexter’s Labratory. And somehow, even with all the similarities, it still comes up as quite original and genuine.

The story really gets started when Mal is given an assignment in school to write about what he wants to be when he grows up. What I like about this story is that it speaks to many of us who didn’t have that one thing while we grew up. Mal doesn’t know what he wants to be. Even with all of the knowledge about everything, he doesn’t know. As an inventor, he goes to great lengths to discover what he would like which always turn out quite hilarious.

This story is just further proving that the author, Stephen McCranie, is in my brain though and somehow knows where my heart and passion are at all times. The ending of this book is quite poignant, without being so deep as to confuse anyone. It is interesting to see that this was McCranie’s first published foray into the poignant. I’ve been a huge fan of his Doodle Alley series where he talks about creativity, art, failure and other abstract ideas in illustrated glory.

But, in the end, Mal and Chad: The Biggest, Bestest Time Ever is a story about a boy and his dog as they make a quite humorous adventure through time and sinks. It’s entertaining, funny, well-illustrated, and fun for all ages!

Ribbit! Recent Commission!

I recently became a slight-less-starving artist by completing my first commissioned illustration!

Based on a pretty great poem, I was tasked with drawing a frog with personality.

I did a lot of sketches of frogs since I hadn’t really drawn one. I posted pictures of my sketches on Instagram (here, here and here). That was fun!

In the end, I drew this dude:

His smirk won over my client, and we made some more tweaks to add the poem to the layout, but the frog smirks on.

I have some more coming up too that I’ll be sharing!

If you’d like to commission me for an illustration, shoot me an email with what you’re looking for an I’ll give you a quote!

The Ultimate Underfold Teaser #5: The Final One

Well everyone, the time has come. The Underfold officially reboots this coming Sunday, June 2nd 2013.

I hope you guys are ready! I’m not quite at where I thought I would be at this point in the game, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. I’ve got a buffer, I’ve got thumbnails going out a few months, I’ve got story treatments for issues 2-5 already written out, and I’ve gotten a bunch of book reviews written to help me keep my buffer!

AND… I had a great idea today. For months, I’ve been thinking about this Featured section. About what would make it better and great, and about what would get you to go read their comics. It finally hit me: I need to do stuff about the author! I’m hoping this won’t delay things too much, but I think it will add that sense of awesome to get to know the author AND their work in the same breath!

We’ll see how it goes! Wish me luck getting a hold of some of the people… 😀

But you’re not here to listen to me yammer on about things, are you? You’re here for your final teaser for the upcoming Ultimate Underfold storyline! Well, you’re in luck because I happen to have it right here:

All will be revealed soon! Well, technically it will be over the course of the story I’ll be telling, but you get the idea.

Stay tuned on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus for updates about the event I’d like to do for the launch!

Here’s some extra fun facts:

  • Every page will be full-color!
  • The first chapter has (at least) 24 pages!
  • You can keep up with The Underfold specifically on Google Plus and Facebook!

I’m pretty excited about this you guys, and I’m toying with the idea of doing some sort of live event on June 2nd (which is a Sunday). Not exactly what I would do, but the idea is there, so stay tuned!

What would you be interested in during a webcomic live event launch? Q&A? Trivia games? PDF giveaways of the previous Underfold book? Let me know in the comments!
