The Shadow Hero by Gene Yuen Lang and Sonny Liew

The Shadow Hero is the story about an unlikely hero. In fact, so unlikely, that he initially doesn’t want to be a hero…but his mom does.

It’s a story of Chinese Americans, superheroes, racism, revenge and what it truly means to be a hero. But that all sounds like it’s not fun. It is fun. It’s hilarious and subversive in ways that I wasn’t expecting. For instance… his outfit… no never mind. I’ll let you experience that fun on your own.

In the story, the way that the young boy eventually gets his superpower is by teaming up with a sassy old Chinese spirit turtle. Who critiques the guy as he’s trying to fight. Their interactions are wonderful.

And the art by Sonny Liew is really great for this story. It’s got an old-comics feel to it which really fits and they have fun with.

It’s a lot of fun, and I highly recommend it.

You guys, it wasn’t but a few years ago that I stumbled onto the world of Josh Ulrich’s Jackie Rose… and then, in turn, a friendship with said Josh Ulrich. The Future of Old Things – Ultimate Underfold Update

Personally, I hate it when a TV show gets cancelled before it is allowed to finish up, or even have a wrap up season. So many questions… Well, this is exactly what I have done to many of you with The Ultimate Underfold!

Previously on The Ultimate Underfold…

Brian, Rob and JB had some how saved the world from certain destruction…from something and some how.

end-of-the-world

Ninja Philip was hot on the trail of something that he couldn’t figure out at TechCorp.ninja-philip-techcorp

Rob had just gotten sucked into a room full of super-cooled nanobots!rob-fate-nanobots

And JB had just left Brian alone in his office with a mysterious room full of… things!brian-fate-gadgets

The intrigue! It’s like a regular episode of LOST around here!

Unlike many TV shows that get cancelled…I had mapped out from beginning to the end what all was going to go down in the next three issues. That said, I think that The Ultimate Underfold deserves a wrap-up… a conclusion… an over-sized, finale issue!

I may not have the time to create 3 more issues of The Ultimate Underfold, but I’ve looked over all of my story notes, and I think I can create an action-packed one-issue-to-rule-them-all finale that would bring the story to a close.

And you are in charge of whether that happens or not! If this sounds like something you’re into, then I need you to let me know.

I have set up a new Patreon (Wait…What’s a Patreon??) milestone for this very occasion. If we can garner a total of $200 in donations each month, then I will make this over-sized finale a reality!

Donate $1 or more and help us reach our goal and see The Ultimate Underfold finish–and finish strong.

Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

I’m not going to lie to you. I haven’t officially read this book. However, I did read the webcomic that it collects for a few years, and the book just came out on Tuesday and I’m excited. OK?!

Here’s the thing, Nimona is a fun, hilarious, weird and all-around crazy fantasy adventure. It’s about a team of… villains. That’s right. Mainly a villain’s sidekick, no less, named Nimona.

The tale is epic. The art is a fantastic cartoony style that fits so well with the rich world and tone of the whole story. If you liked Lumberjanes, Noelle Stevenson was one of the main contributors to that series and that same spark is woven through her solo project as well.

If you’re into villains, shape-shifters, knights, wizards and all of that fantastical jazz, then you’ll love this one.

Not only that, but this is another one that’s great for teens/young adults.

Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Brooke Allen and Shannon Watters

What do you get when you cross all the best, fun parts of My Little Pony (the new one at least) with The Goonies and summer camp adventure stories? Lumberjanes. That’s what.

Lumberjanes was probably my favorite comic series find of this last year. It’s about a group of friends all tucked away at a summer camp where strange things begin to happen and they’re the only ones who can solve the mystery and save everyone. It’s got tons of action. Lots of pretty interesting mystery with mythology and folklore wrapped up in it too.

The best parts of Lumberjanes are seriously every character. Each of these girls has been written with care. They’re each awesome in their own way. They all get to have a spotlight and it’s… they have such a great chemistry. I know they’re written, but this is key for a group cast. None of them seems to take the center stage over the rest and there is a ton of depth written into each one.

Seriously. Read it. If you’re not enamored with every part of this…then we’re reading different books.

(Also, I personally feel like this book stands on its own two feet because it is a solid project, but if you’re into it… this is an all-ladies production and that is rad. It’s an awesome book. By awesome ladies. All awesome role models for my daughters. Ladies, you rock. I love these comics.)
